RTHQ: SEGA Lock-On Bazooka
Wow. I never even knew this existed until now. It has answered many questions.
This is the Lock-On Bazooka, it features a 55m range compared to the pistols 40m. (Although these numbers, at least for the pistol, are about 50% of actual range.) The copyrights on the unit and packaging are 1992 and 1993 which are the same as the original pistols. I'm guessing that this bazooka was made at the same time if not before the original gear.
The headset has the battery housed in a plastic box on the headset band, an additional plastic strap is provided to connect with the plastic box and join to the front of the headset. This explains why all the headsets have the cutout section in the top which has no use, SEGA must have decided against using it for the later versions. The headset also has two photodiodes located in the sensing dome, mounted at 90° to each other. Later versions (except for Voice Command) only have one mounted flat against the plastic but still retain the same angled plastic piece.
The bazooka itself is very light and is not ergonomically well designed. It is rather uncomfortable to shoulder and is almost impossible to use the provided sight without putting your head directly behind the stock. It features a normal team select button, this one is red and it can select team A or B. Instead of a high-power button it has a 'bazooka' button located at the front of the gun. The gun can operate 4 different modes depending on what buttons are held at power up. In all modes there is a red LED which turns on located behind the smaller lens, providing a red torch like beam. The pistols also have this smaller lens but no red LED behind it, I had always wondered what it was intended for - now I know!
